Dubai launches Green Tourism Awards

Dubai’s Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) has successfully launched the second cycle of the Dubai Green Tourism Awards.HotelierMiddleEast.com has reported that the awards, which first took place back in 2009, are hoping to attract even more participants.Some 79 hotels and 450 general managers participated in the first round of the Dubai Green Tourism Awards, with individuals invited to participate in workshops and seminars.It forms part of DTCM’s initiative to turn the highly successful tourism industry green and sustainable, the news provider explained.The environmental programme aims to reduce hotel carbon emissions by 20 per cent and has already enrolled a number of prominent five-star properties in Dubai.For this year’s awards, DTCM has extended participation to include two-star hotels and standard hotel apartments.It follows research from Alpen Capital that forecast that revenue from hotel rooms in the GCC are expected to reach $22 billion (£13.4 billion) by the end of 2012.The investment bank added that this figure is expected to rise further still to $37 billion by 2015.
