Dubai international sees rise in passenger numbers

Investors looking at the Middle East as a potential region for ventures could be among those interested in the recent figures published by Dubai International.The airport has revealed that more than 27 million passengers passed through its terminals in 2010.Major-General Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri, director-general of the Residency and Foreigners Affairs Department, has said that his department processed 27,093,236 flight applications in and out of the emirate last year.The organisation also claimed that 2011 has started off well with an increase of almost 180,000 passengers travelling through the airport in the first three months.He commented: "A total of 926,833 passengers used e-gates from January to March 2011 against 856,064 over the same period in 2010."A further rise was also noticed as 17,651 cards were issued in first quarter of this year compared to 15,089 over the same period in 2010."The news comes shortly after Etihad Airways announced two new international ventures. The airline is poised to launch flights to and from New Zealand and Kazakhstan after signing an agreement with Air New Zealand and Air Astana.
