Retail revenues at Abu Dhabi International Airport reached a record AED 582 million in 2010, new figures show.
According to the Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC), which operates the emirate's five airports, the result amounted to a 15 per cent increase on 2009.
It was suggested that the strong retail performance was mostly attributable to Abu Dhabi International's 12 per cent passenger growth last year, as well as various marketing initiatives.
"In particular, the month of November saw a year-on-year revenue spike as a result of the airport's promotional activities during the F1 season in Abu Dhabi," said ADAC.
"The launch and roll out of the new Shop-Dine-Unwind brand for Abu Dhabi Duty Free in May 2010 was another key driver for the double digit increase in the airport's retail performance."
It was reported that the average transaction value at the airport during 2010 was AED 194, one of the highest in the region.
ADAC said that during 2011, travellers can expect the launch of new luxury brands and retail and food and beverage outlets, as well as a fully renovated duty-free area in Terminal 1.
