New cruise terminal opens in Abu Dhabi

The tourism industry in Abu Dhabi could be given a short-term boost following the opening of a new temporary cruise terminal.Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA) along with the Abu Dhabi Ports Company and Abu Dhabi Terminals has announced that the terminal has been opened at Mina Zayed with capacity for 1,3000 passengers.HE Mubarak Al Muhairi, director general of ADTA, said: "Cruise shipping has enjoyed strong recession-proof growth for many years."The market obviously ranges between low cost volume cruise business and very high end exclusive cruises - Abu Dhabi is targeting the higher end segment."According to the firms behind the new port, the 2,000 square metre facility will cater to the cruise seasons between now and 2013.The temporary facility is comprised of two halls, a luggage-handling zone and a passenger-handling area.A waiting lounge, security section, prayer rooms, offices, visitor information centre, currency exchange and customs and immigration facilities have also been provided.The news comes as a number of international airlines have announced new flights into the emirate.
