Dubai residents offered govt-run taxi service

The government's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has launched a taxi service specifically catered to students and Dubai residents who have a fixed daily route. Customers can subscribe to the In Safe Hands taxi service on a weekly, monthly or yearly basis for free, only paying for the distance travelled like a regular taxi, Emirates 24/7 reported.Passengers can also choose the type of car they want and their driver before ordering their taxi, as both male and female drivers will be available.Indeed, as well as being targeted to students, the service is also aimed at women and families."We are starting this service for the safety and convenience of our loyal passengers, who have to book taxis daily for their trips," Abdul Mohsin Ibrahim, chief executive of RTA's strategic and corporate governance department, told the news provider. He said that a fleet of 60 taxis are currently running the service and if it becomes popular and in high demand, then this number could rise.Passengers face a starting fare of Dh25 and an additional Dh1.71 per kilometre travelled.
