Dubai hosts dedicated cruise tourism event

Dubai's Meydan Hotel will play host this week to the first ever industry cruise tourism event. From tomorrow (October 19th), members from the cruise industry will meet with and the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing and other businesses including DP World at the Seatrade Middle East Cruise Convention. They will address issues regarding how Dubai's burgeoning cruise industry is affecting the emirate's economy. The need for the event was brought about after the number of cruise ships visiting Dubai over the past five years has more than quadrupled to 425,000 this year. By 2015 this figure is predicted to rise to as many as 625,000 visitors.Commenting on the trend, Chris Hayman, chairman of Seatrade and organiser of the convention, said: "This has positioned the industry as a integral part of the future development strategy of the region's key tourism hubs."Gulf News reported this week that Dubai could be looking to expand its cruise terminal facilities to accommodate the increase in cruise ships docking in its ports.
