MSC Cruises is considering plans to operate out of Dubai by the end of next year, it has been reported.

Speaking to, an MSC spokesperson confirmed that Dubai was an area the line was interested in.

"We are looking at a number of destinations, but nothing has been released yet," she said. "We are an expanding company and Dubai is one of the markets that we are considering."

According to the website, MSC is aiming to compete with its Italian rival Costa Cruises, which currently has a large presence in Dubai.

Indeed, it was reported that Costa Cruises currently has five cruises scheduled to depart from Dubai's port in December 2010.

MSC's UK and Ireland chairman Peter Pate confirmed the company is on the look-out for "good port facilities, good access to flights and good infrastructure" as part of its expansion strategy.

Princess Cruises, Azamara and Regent Seven Seas are among the other major cruise lines currently operating from the emirate.

Dubai's new cruise terminal was formally opened in February this year.
