Dubai International Airport recorded a 14.7 per cent increase in passenger traffic during the first eight months of this year compared to the same period last year, new figures show.
The data also revealed that the 15-month-old budget airline flydubai has now emerged as the second largest source of passenger traffic at Dubai International.
Commenting on the figures, Saj Ahmad, chief analyst at the UK's FBE Aerospace, predicted that flydubai will continue its rapid expansion.
"In a very short time, you will see flydubai emerging as the biggest budget airline in the Gulf, outgrowing Air Arabia," he told Gulf News.
Mr Ahmad also noted that the airline has developed a close coordination with Emirates that is helping to feed passenger traffic.
Other Dubai International data showed that cargo movement increased by 21.5 per cent year-on-year in August.
Earlier this week, flydubai announced aircraft financing worth more than $750 million in deals with General Electric Capital Aviation Services and BBAM.
