Car Rental Firms Count the Costs of the Dubai Metro

The Dubai Metro is proving a big hit with the city’s commuters! However while the network may be celebrating, the upsurge in metro business is having a knock on effect on some vehicle rental companies. Industry sources say a number of smaller firms have witnessed a drop in business since the launch of the Metro in September last year. “Many people who earlier used our services have opted for the metro, especially women. It is cheaper, safer and faster for them. We have lost around 40 per cent of our business since the launch of metro in September last year,” said Sathyanath Manikurg, Operations Manager at Fancy Passenger Transport.

At the start of May, the Dubai Metro opened another round of stations on the Red Line, one of which was the Dubai Internet City stop, right next to The First Group’s Metro Central development. Combined with the new bridge opening at The Greens beside Tecom, commuters now have excellent connections to Dubai Media City, Internet City, Knowledge Village and the rest of the city. The opening of the Dubai Metro stop on the edge of Tecom has also served to increase the area’s status as a coveted business and residential zone.
