Ras Al Khaimah (RAK) has been selected to host the UAE branch of one of the world's leading science and engineering schools, it has been revealed.
Opening in the emirate in autumn 2011, the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL) will become the latest overseas academic institution to expand its operations to the Gulf, the National reported.
The newspaper quoted Patrick Aebischer, the president of the EPFL, who confirmed that the RAK institution will focus solely on postgraduate studies and research, thereby demarcating it from other UAE colleges and universities.
In addition, Dr Franco Vigliotti, the dean of EPFL Middle East, said the emirate's climate would help direct the research programmes, adding: "From the scientific perspective, RAK is an ideal location for hands-on research on some of the most important challenges of the century - energy, water and sustainable development."
Last week, it was revealed that authorities in Ras Al Khaimah are looking to sell equity in some of the emirate's 16 government-related companies as a means of stabilising state finances.
