Abu Dhabi's national electricity grid operator has contracted Siemens Energy to expand the country's power distribution network, it has been revealed.
The Abu Dhabi Transmission & Dispatch Company (Transco) will employ Siemens and its partner Electromechanical LLC to supply transformer substations and switchgear as part of the EUR150 million project.
Abu Dhabi is currently expanding its electricity supply network on an ongoing basis in order to keep pace with the rising demand for energy. Analysts expect that electricity demand in the country will continue to grow by 10 per cent each year.
The new substations - which will supply power to various parts of the emirate including the CO2-free Masdar City and Abu Dhabi's new airport - are scheduled for completion by 2013.
"We're proud that Transco has again opted for field-proven, first-class equipment from Siemens for the expansion of Abu Dhabi's electricity grid," said Peter Loescher, chief executive officer of Siemens AG.
Meanwhile, the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority also reported an 8.91 per cent increase in electricity generation during the first three months of 2010.
