Dubai considers Olympics bid

Dubai is considering the costs and benefits of a possible bid to host the 2020 Olympic Games, the emirate's ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has said.

In an interview with WAM News Agency at the opening of SportAccord 2010 – a top-level international sports convention which is being held in Dubai until Friday (April 30th) - Sheikh Mohammed confirmed that studies are under way to evaluate the feasibility of a potential bid.

He said no bid is currently in place, but added: "I can assure you of this, though: if we decide to make a bid for the Olympics, we will be in it to win. We would not take such a step unless we were quite serious about it."

Sheikh Mohammed suggested Dubai would benefit from the evaluation process regardless of whether a bid was formalised, noting that it would enable the government to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the emirate's transportation systems, tourism facilities and sports venues.

He argued that Dubai already has well-developed infrastructure and a good track record of staging international sporting events and pointed to the emirate's multicultural make-up as being firmly in-tune with Olympic principles.

SportAccord, which began on Sunday (April 25th), brings together members of the International Olympic Committee's executive board, the leaders of international sports federations and top executives from the sports industry.
