Abu Dhabi's municipal authorities are investing heavily in "mega infrastructure projects" in order to meet the requirements of a rapidly developing city, it has been suggested.

IQPC Middle East, a business conference organiser, observed that there has been a strong focus on achieving a highly efficient transport system for Abu Dhabi.

It said that one of the most notable projects is the Al Salam Street Tunnel, which has been devised through co-operation between the Municipality of Abu Dhabi City, the Urban Planning Council, the Department of Transport and the Abu Dhabi Police.

The comments come ahead of the Tunnels and Underground Construction Middle East conference, which is due to take place between May 23-26.

During the conference, Abdullah S. Al Shamsi, acting executive director of municipal infrastructure for Abu Dhabi, will provide an insight into current trends including the reasons for the current boom in underground construction across the Middle East.

It was also recently reported that Abu Dhabi will be the setting for Arabian Construction Week next month, which will feature over 150 exhibitors showcasing hundreds of the latest products and construction solutions
