Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, vice-president and prime minister of the UAE and ruler of Dubai, has laid the foundation at the new paediatric hospital in Al Wasl, Dubai.
In news that may be welcomed by parents who own property in Dubai, the new facilities will be completed in 2011 and will be the first dedicated children's hospital in the emirate.
The hospital has been named Al Jalilah bint Mohammed bin Rashid Paediatric Hospital, in celebration of Sheikh Mohammed's daughter.
During his visit to the site, the sheikh was briefed on the design of the new facilities, which will boast the very latest in medical advances, including high-spec incubators and therapeutic equipment.
Once it is complete, the hospital will offer support for all manner of diseases, ailments and injuries, with 200 beds available.
Earlier this year, the Dubai Health Authority announced that more than 3,000 physicians have completed the first stage of the registration process under new licensing arrangements introduced by the regulatory body.
