Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qassimi, crown prince and deputy ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, has officially opened the new American University in the northern emirate.
The new university, established by royal decree this week, is the manifestation of Sheikh Saud's vision for an internationally recognised institution that would serve the needs of emiratis with property in Ras Al Khaimah and elsewhere in the UAE.
Ras Al Khaimah also boasts a higher education institution of considerable merit, with the British American University opening its doors in January 2006.
The campus cost $200 million to build and includes 13 colleges offering fully accredited courses on an array of subjects including engineering, medicine, law and civil aviation.
More recently, the University of Pune has also this month established its presence in Ras Al Khaimah with the inaugural lecture at its new campus in the emirate.
"With this great beginning, the stage is now set for launching a fully-fledged academic programme in RAK from the ensuing academic year beginning September 2009," said Sheikh Saud.
