Base jumpers seek to conquer Burj Dubai

A growing number of extreme sports enthusiasts are pleading with the owners of the Burj Dubai to allow them to base jump off the building.

Khaleej Times has spoken to two such thrill-seekers who are seeking permission to jump off the record-breaking building, which has now reached its final height of 818 metres.

"I want to put on a show, for the residents of Dubai and for viewers all around the world. This would boost publicity for the owners of the building," said base jumper Terje Halvorsen in a telephone interview with the paper.

Two jumpers - a Frenchman and an Englishman - have already jumped off the building, with the duo doing so illegally when the building stood at 629 meters.

The Burj Dubai is already the tallest building in the world and its final height has been a closely guarded secret.

It reached its apex of 818 metres in January of this year, with final construction work due to be completed in December 2009.

Work started on the building in 2004.ADNFCR-2019-ID-19139375-ADNFCR
