Terminal two at Jebel Ali port is coming close to completion, officials from port owner Dubai Ports World have confirmed.
When completed, the terminal will allow for an increase in capacity of five million 20-foot equivalent container units at the port, meaning it will be able to handle a total of some 14 million units.
Anwar Wajdi, senior vice-president of commercial and corporate strategy, told Emirates Business 24/7: "We are opening the last phase of Terminal two at the end of this month and this will enhance our efficiency by ensuring faster movements of goods out of the port."
The firm is set to continue pursuing its long-term strategic goals, which include opening a new port at Taweelah by 2012.
Mr Wajdi added that the firm is likely to continue to grow over the course of this year.
Dubai Ports World currently operates a total of 48 container ports in 27 different countries around the world.
