Dubai's first cinema dedicated to arthouse and independent films will further enhance the emirate's burgeoning cultural scene and help spark debate among moviegoers, it has been claimed.
Part of the Reel Cinemas complex, located in downtown Burj Dubai and in close proximity to some of the most in-demand property in Dubai, the Picturehouse only opened this month, though its programme of thought-provoking works sourced from all over the world is already proving a hit.
Alongside the five films it has lined up to show over December and January, the new venue also boasts an ongoing calendar of events, including discussion forums, mini-festivals and lectures.
Celebrating the opening of the venue, general manager Gordon Kirk stated that the Picturehouse represents a new era of cinema in Dubai.
"For serious movie lovers, it will bring a wide array of exciting classics, arthouse and independent films, which will spark debates amongst our patrons," he said.
The Dubai Mall, in which the venue is housed, is one of the most exciting commercial properties in Dubai of recent years and is now home to 22 cinema screens as well as 1,200 retail outlets.
The Mall currently attracts around three million visitors a month, with the Dubai Aquarium and the Discovery Centre also serving as big draws.
