Building families for children in need.

SOS Children's Village International was created by Austrian philanthropist Hermann Gmeiner who laid the very first village’s foundation stone in Austria in 1949. Since then the organisation has grown to encompass over 490 children’s villages in 124 countries. Construction of the first SOS Children's Village in Nigeria began in 1970 and today it has grown greatly to include five 'villages' throughout the country. Each SOS Children’s’ Village in Nigeria has 10-12 family houses with medical facilities. Six of the villages also include youth facilities, while all of them include kindergarten and primary schools, which are open to every child living in the communities. All SOS Children’s Villages worldwide work on the basis of four principles:

  • The Mother: Each child has a caring parent
  • Brothers and Sisters: Family ties are built with children living together as siblings
  • The House: Each family creates its own home
  • The Village: Each SOS family is part of a community

  • 168.8 million - Nigeria's population in 2012
  • 12 million - the number of estimated orphans in the country
  • 360,000 - the number of children living with HIV/AIDS
  • Five SOS Children's Villages across Nigeria
  • Over 78,000 children are benefiting across 124 countries
  • 490 - the total number of SOS Children’s Villages worldwide

"We thank our friends and partners who have committed their hard earned funds and quality time for the welfare of the children. We appeal to more people to join hands with us in creating a better and brighter world for the Nigerian child."  Eghosa Erhumwunse, National Director, SOS Children's Villages Nigeria
