Dubai is famous for being the home of some of the most interesting property in the world, in addition to having fantastic resorts and leisure facilities - but what some people love most about the emirate is that it is a shopping hub.Indeed, the Khaleej Times reports that a survey by international credit card company MasterCard has found $8.8 billion (£5.6 billion) is expected to be spent in the region this year. The emirate is due to attract 8.8 million international visitors in the coming months, overtaking other top tourism destinations Frankfurt and Kuala Lumpur.Dubai is now ranked eighth in the world in terms of tourism spending, with London, Paris and Bangkok presiding over the top of the table. The MasterCard index predicts visitor expenditure will increase by 18.9 per cent - or $1.4 billion - in 2012, compared to 2011's $7.4 billion. Both visitor traffic and cross-border travel were analysed by the credit card giant regarding 132 cities around the world and Dubai - with its seven-star Burj Al Arab hotel and the Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest tower - dominated the top spots in two categories for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. The emirate is both the most popular destination for tourists and has the highest total visitor spending, while neighbouring Abu Dhabi - the UAE capital - is third on the table, as it is expected to welcome 11.5 million guests who will spend an estimated $11.4 billion. The regional outlook for the MENA area is bright, with visitor numbers for its top ten cities set to grow by 7.2 per cent, while total international spending is predicted to rise by 10.4 per cent, while average expenditure per visit is anticipated to rise by three per cent.Dubai is the fastest-growing of all these MENA metropolises, with developers and hoteliers jostling for space in the burgeoning region, while Abu Dhabi will expand at the quickest pace in terms of consumer activity by 20.7 per cent this year alone.
