Ras al-Khaimah to host America's Cup

People who own property in UAE and enjoy sporting events may want to clear a space in their diaries for February 8th next year.

This is the start date of the 2010 America's Cup - and defender for the title Alinghi and its yacht club the Societe Nautique de Geneve (SNG) have announced Ras al-Khaimah will host it.

Fred Meyer, vice-commodore of the SNG, explained a purpose-built island will provide the teams, sponsors and fans with "an outstanding venue" for this 33rd competition.

He added the weather conditions will be ideal for a match in February and the location already has experience hosting a number of top-class sporting events – such as ATP tennis and Formula One.

"In the end we settled on Ras al-Khaimah in particular because of the infrastructure in Al Hamra Village and because it has a great building sea breeze during the day … making it good for these boats and safe for all concerned," stated Mr Meyer.

Established in 2000, Alinghi first won the 31st America's Cup, which was held in Auckland.ADNFCR-2019-ID-19298738-ADNFCRADNFCR-2019-ID-19298738-ADNFCR
