Michael Owen
Football legend Michael Owen was destined for the top ever since he burst into Liverpool’s first team aged just 17. A year later his legendary solo goal against Argentina in the 1998 World Cup made a global audience realise his incredible talents. Since then he has gone on to establish himself as one of the finest strikers of his generation. He has scored goals prolifically in a glittering career with Liverpool, Real Madrid and Newcastle.
Michael has a string of major football accolades to his name and has been voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year and Carling Premiership Player of the Year. With a tally of 40 international goals, he has ensured legendary status in the history of English football.
A frequent Dubai visitor, Michael is a proud member of The First Team and an owner at The First Group’s Dubai Sports City projects, The Diamond and The Bridge.
Andrew Flintoff
Since making his Test debut at the tender age of 20, Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff has established himself as the greatest all-round cricketer since the days of England legend Ian Botham. Nicknamed Freddie because his surname sounds like cartoon character Fred Flintstone’s, Andrew is one of England’s best-loved sportsmen.
Despite frequent battles against injuries, Freddie has fought back to secure some incredible career highlights, including his first Test century in 2002 and Player Awards from the ICC and Professional Cricket Association in 2004. He recovered from ankle surgery in 2005 to play a huge part in England’s epic Ashes triumph and went on to captain his country. In 2008 he overcame yet another serious injury to clinch Man of the Series for his spectacular display during England’s 4-0 over South Africa in the one-day international home series.
No stranger to Dubai, Freddie is an owner at The Bridge - The First Group’s second landmark project in Dubai Sports City.
Svetlana Kuznetsóva
At the age of just 23, Russian tennis ace Svetlána is firmly established as one of the world’s top players. She has a Grand Slam title under her belt, having clinched the 2004 US Open with a win over compatriot Elena Dementieva. She also narrowly missed out at the 2006 French Open and the 2007 US Open, finishing runner-up in both.
Sporting achievement has certainly proved a pivotal part of the Kuznetsóva genes. Growing up, Svetlána watched her family excel on the international cycling circuit. Her father coached five Olympic champions, and her mother was a six-time world champion and holder of 20 world records. But after finding cycling boring, Svetlána turned to tennis and quickly became a household name in the sport.
Svetlána is the first female member of The First Team and owner at The Matrix, one of The First Group’s luxury Dubai Sports City projects.
Sam Torrance
As one of the world’s most popular golfers, Scotland’s Sam Torrance spent nearly two decades as a dominant European Tour player, and his Ryder Cup exploits are some of the most legendary in the famous event.
After several post-school jobs, Sam followed in the footsteps of his father Bob, a respected golf coach. He turned professional at 16, winning his first European Tour event just two years later. Sam has amassed 21 European victories, a tally second only to fellow Scot Colin Montgomerie. He represented Europe eight times in the Ryder Cup, memorably sinking the winning putt in 1985 which ensured the trophy returned to Europe for the first time in 28 years. In 2002, Sam turned from player to captain and led Europe to a famous victory at The Belfry.
As an important member of The First Team, Sam is an owner at The Matrix, one of The First Group’s prestigious Dubai Sports City projects.
Bryan Habana
Bryan Gary Habana’s legendary speed has earned him some of the highest praise in the world of rugby. Named after former Manchester United footballers Bryan Robson and Gary Bailey, the South African first played as a scrum half and outside centre, before moving to wing. Here, his explosive pace shone through and he went on to play for the Blue Bulls in the Currie Cup and the Bulls in Super 14.
It was in 2007 that Bryan shot to global fame as he made a significant contribution to the Springboks’ victory in the 2007 Rugby World Cup.
Hailed as one of the tournament’s major stars, Habana scored eight tries to equal Jonah Lomu’s 1999 record. He went on to become the 2007 IRB Player of the Year. Widely dubbed the fastest man in rugby, Habana’s astonishing pace was famously proven when he raced a cheetah – the world’s fastest animal – for charity.
As one of the newest members of The First Team, Habana is currently discussing a number of property deals with The First Group.
Andriy Shevchenko
At the age of just ten, Ukrainian icon Andriy Shevchenko was spotted by his country’s top club, Dynamo Kyiv. After making his senior debut in 1992, he carved a name on the European scene, thanks largely to an explosive hat-trick against Barcelona during the 1997-98 Champions League.
Before long, Italian giants AC Milan snapped up Shevchenko for a world record fee, and his 24-goal total in his first season cemented his status as one of the world’s most dangerous forwards. He is only the fifth player in Champions League history to score four goals in one game, and is ranked amongst Milan’s all-time great goal scorers. In 2006, Shevchenko moved to Chelsea, whom he helped to win the FA Cup, before returning to Milan in 2008.
Andriy is a proud member of The First Team and a property owner at Metro Central, The First Group’s exclusive hotel apartments.
